Identifying and Addressing Headwinds in the Decade Ahead: The LCME Strategic Visioning Process for Its Standards and Your Role in It
Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)-accredited medical education programs and the academic environments that support them have always faced challenges from both macro- and micro-environmental sources. Over the past five years, the breadth and depth of those challenges have increased, generating both broadly experienced negative forces and more targeted negative forces that differentially and disproportionately affect one type of institution more than another. This has disrupted and created fragmentation both within the academic medical community and among its medical education programs, all of which are held to the same set of expectations by the LCME. These forces — which include cross-national health system consolidations and financial incentives to expand class sizes at medical schools and other health professional schools, or to create new campuses — continue to gather strength and produce strong headwinds for both the larger academic medical community and the LCME. The time could not be better for the LCME and its accredited medical schools to collectively analyze the effects of these headwinds on the ongoing quality, consistency, and sustainability of their medical education programs and, if needed, prospectively prepare to “tack” and steer forward together wisely and effectively.
During this session, participants will collaborate with each other to (1) articulate looming shared challenges for the academic medicine community, and (2) with the LCME, identify the top three priority issues that might be addressed, at least in part, through changes in the intent and expectations of LCME accreditation standards or elements.
