The Principles and Practices of LCME Decision-Making: One Size Does Not Fit All

The 157 LCME-accredited medical education programs in the United States are administered and delivered through highly variable organizational and governance structures that reflect increasing diversity in the overall health care macroenvironment and corresponding changes in the academic medicine microenvironments of individual institutions. Based on their histories and missions, medical education programs also differ in how the curriculum is organized, taught, and staffed. Intentionally, to accommodate these different structures and curricular models and to promote individual programmatic innovation while meeting accreditation expectations, the principles and practices of LCME decision-making are based on the intent of accreditation standards and elements, are not norm-referenced, and incorporate analysis of outcomes and system effectiveness across accreditation standards and elements. This session will: 1) state and explain the rationale for the overarching principles used by the LCME to make decisions on performance in accreditation elements, compliance with accreditation standards, and accreditation status; 2) outline and give examples of the practice guidelines used by the LCME to make decisions on the LCME to ensure that its members, peer survey teams, and medical education programs are familiar with and apply these principles and practices consistently, flexibly, and effectively.
