General Submitted Questions

1. Is a set of high-level institutional priorities, with narrative descriptions of progress, sufficient to meet the requirement for having a strategic plan?

2. Element 1.3 – Recently, there has been discussion among schools regarding the need for, as well as the number of, faculty members who are directly voted on by their peers on school committees. Can the secretariat further clarify how much and to what level there needs (or does not need) to be committee members who are voted into that position to meet this standard? Moreover, does self-nomination/peer-nomination to the majority of school committees constitute an effective mechanism for direct faculty participation? Or, is there an expectation that with self/peer nominations that schools also have some elected committee membership? If so, what percentage of committee membership should be elected?

3. Does Element 11.3 pertain to extramural electives taken at institutions, organizations, or schools regardless of geographic location, or just those that are located outside of the United States? Some of the issues listed in the element such as political instability, challenges to the home institution’s code of the medical ethics seem more applicable to extramural electives in other countries.

4. Element 10.3 – The element states, the faculty of a medical school establish criteria for student selection and develop and implement effective policies and procedures regarding, and make decisions about, medical student application, selection, admission, assessment, promotion, graduation, and any disciplinary action. Could you please say more about the specific role of faculty of a medical school in “making decisions about” promotion, graduation, and any disciplinary action.
